JITTER MEASUREMENTS "DVD-RAM Jitter Analyzing Technique"

2. Jitter Measurement with TIA Method

Jitter is instability of the pulse in time. It deteriorates the error rate characteristic of the digital data; one of the basic evaluation items of the drive and optical pickup.

The TIA method (i.e., jitter measurement technique to obtain the statistics data with a time interval analyzer, TIA) is prescribed by the DVD Book.

The LE 1875 (S1 version) obtains the statistic values of jitter through digital processing method as well as a TIA method described above.

Jitter generated by an optical disc, optical pickup, and drive is random phenomena. Therefore, jitter is obtained by using the statistic method from measurement data by calculating accumulated data, then displayed as standard deviation in sigma format.

The histogram consists of the time data on the horizontal axis and the frequency distribution on the vertical axis. The Figure below shows the histogram.

Since the dispersion of time data is considered to be standard deviation,
the jitter is obtained from the following formulas.
